Call for papers

Crucial challenges of the global economy are the fight against poverty and promotion of social cohesion and equal opportunities through the creation of economic value. Matching individual talents with financial resources is crucial to promoting social mobility, productivity and growth. However, financial exclusion and asset deprivation have global dimensions. In the USA as well as Europe, 10% of the families belonging to economic vulnerable groups like immigrants, the young and the elderly, have no bank relationships and potentially experience the threat of being economically and socially excluded. The proportion is almost reversed in the poorest countries where the share of those holding current accounts is not much higher than 10 %.

The purpose of this special issue is to bring together updated and original research contributions on theoretical, empirical and policy aspects of the relationship between finance, poverty, social mobility and productivity.

Potential topics include but are not limited to:

  • Banking the poor and the unbanked
  • Microfinance
  • The geography of banks and financial exclusion
  • Social mobility and access to credit
  • Housing finance, healthcare finance and poverty
  • Fertility, education, migration and finance
  • Gender and race discrimination in credit markets
  • Social cohesion, finance and the shadow economy
  • Social capital and finance
  • Not-for-profit finance and social exclusion
  • Finance and economic development
  • Policy issues on finance and poverty
