Presentation

We invite submissions for a joint SUS.DIV - FEEM - University of Padua - CEPR conference on “Economics of Culture, Institutions and Crime”, which will take place at FEEM, Milan, 20-22 January 2010.
Economists have recently started to explore the role of cultural traits and beliefs, cultural diversity, social norms as well as endogenous preferences for a wide range of socio-economic interactions. Such elements seem to be crucial for the well functioning of institutions and legal systems. The purpose of this conference is to provide an opportunity to present and discuss the most recent research perspectives on these topics.

Papers are being sought that focus e.g., on the following topics:
∙ Dynamic models of cultural transmission and cultural diversity
∙ Cultural diversity and discrimination
∙ Political economy of culture and institutions
∙ Socioeconomic and cultural determinants of crime
Globalization, migration and cultural evolution
∙ Social capital and economic development
∙ Evolution of culture and institutional change
∙ Segregation, integration, and conflicts
∙ Historical origins of culture and institutions.

This event is the follow up to the SUS.DIV – CEPR – PSE Conference Models of Cultural Dynamics and Diversity (held at PSE, 11-13 December 2008) and the arrival point of the Research Project on “Economic analysis of crime and social interactions” promoted by the University of Padua. The conference is supported by:

- SUS.DIV Network of Excellence “Sustainable Development in a Diverse World“, funded by FP6 Priority 7 -Citizens and governance in a knowledge-based society
- University of Padua Research Project “Economic analysis of crime and social interactions” (grant CPDA071899)
- Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM)
Theoretical and empirical papers are welcome. A title and an abstract will be sufficient for the submission, but finished papers are preferable.

If you would like to submit a paper proposal, please upload a one-page abstract or provisional draft with your reply form by visiting http://www.cepr.org/YourProfile/Meetings and indicate whether you wish to present a paper or act as a discussant. You will also be asked to specify your funding requirements. Travel (economy class tickets) and accommodation funding will be provided. If you have alternative research funding at your disposal, we encourage you to indicate your willingness to use this to attend the event on your reply form. This will help fund participants who do not have other sources of funding, young researchers in particular, whom we are committed to fully fund.
