In most countries the SME sector makes an enormous contribution – in New Zealand, our 350,000 or so SMEs make up more than 99% of all businesses and account for about 60% of employment. The SME sector broadly covers micro-enterprises (fewer than 5 staff), small enterprises (6-49) and medium enterprises (50-100).

The Centre builds on Massey University’s long involvement with SMEs, by undertaking research, consultancy and extension activities for organisations involved in SME development. Our research associates have worked on a huge range of projects since the Centre’s inception in 2000 – both in pursuing their own research interests and undertaking team research for specific clients.
