This paper aims at identifying the channel through which inherited cultural traits a ect current economic development in the long run. The study, carried out using data on 102 Italian provinces, establishes a strong effect of inherited cultural traits on the di erent quality of current formal institutions, measured by the length of civil trials, whereby di erent levels of development are determined. Those e ects are robust to the inclusion of accumulation of human capital, past economic development, geographical characteristics, and current civic capital.
