Whither
Social Capital? Past, Present and Future
Families & Social Capital ESRC Research Group
6 - 7 April 2005
London South Bank University
An international and multidisciplinary conference
for:
Researchers conducting theoretical and empirical research
addressing issues of social capital;
Policy-makers and practitioners working in the field
of social cohesion and social inclusion.
In recent years, social capital has become a key concept
in academic theories and research, and a framework for guiding
policymaking. Arguably, it allows a focus on social relationships,
the values held, and access to resources in families, communities,
regions and even nations. But does the concept hide more than
it illuminates? Has it replaced past theories that were more
able to explain the nature of social life? Are there new concepts
developing that are better able to address the diversity and
complexity of contemporary social, economic and political
life?
Plenary speakers are Barbara
Arneil (University of British Columbia), Frank
Furstenberg (University of Pennsylvania) and Mike
Savage (University of Manchester). They will focus on
aspects of the past, present and future of social capital
as a concept and policy guide. In addition, we are calling
for submissions for paper presentations addressing:
• social justice and social welfare
• social solidarity and social movements
• diversity and citizenship
• families and communities
• the economy and globalisation
The deadline for submission of abstracts
of up to 200 words is 1 September 2004.
Abstracts should be submitted, by email to: Jane
Williams.
