Seminar for doctoral students and junior researchers
Organized by
The research project "Sport and Social Capital in the European Union"
funded
by a European Commission "Marie Curie Excellence Grant"
and hosted by Università Bocconi
Università Luigi Bocconi, Milan, Italy
20th November 2008
Call for abstracts
As part of the forthcoming international conference on The Social Impact of Sport
Governance & Management, to be held on November 20-22, the research group “Sport
and Social Capital in the European Union” is pleased to offer a workshop for PhD students
and junior researchers on 20 November 2008 from 9.00 to 13.00, to be held at Università
Bocconi in Milan. The seminar provides an ideal opportunity to young researchers in all
fields within the social studies of sport (particularly the sociology and anthropology of
sport, sport history, sport management, politics of sport, and sport policy) to improve their
research skills and to learn from colleagues, and thus to enhance opportunities for an
academic career. The seminar has the following specific objectives: a) promote the
development of a young community of scholars within a spirit of collaborative research, b)
provide a qualified setting for feedback on participants’ current research and guidance for
future action, c) discuss publication strategies.
The seminar is overseen by the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Sport and Social
Capital project (Prof. Elio Borgonovi, Prof. Giovanni Fattore, Dr Margaret Groeneveld,
Prof. Barrie Houlihan, Prof. Fabien Ohl). The PhD seminar is convened by Prof. Giovanni
Fattore and Dr. Dino Numerato and it is open to PhD students and young researchers
working in academic institutions and research centres with a specific interest in the
governance, management and policy of sport.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------^^^
Format of the seminar
The seminar is open only to active participants. Each participant will deliver a paper,
present it during the seminar and act as discussant of another paper. For each paper there
will be a presentation by the author (15 minutes), comments by a discussant (10 minutes),
open debate and reply by the author (15 minutes). Presentations and discussions are
expected to make a concrete contribution to the improvement of papers for future
publication.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------^^^
Submission of abstracts and evaluation process
Selection of participants will be based on two-page extended abstracts, including: title,
author information, research question, theoretical background, methodology, and intended
contribution to the field. Abstracts will be judged against the following criteria: a)
originality and theoretical foundations; b) rigour and appropriateness of methodology; c)
potential contribution to advancing the social science of sport in the areas of sport
governance and management. The deadline for abstract submission is July 20th. Abstracts
should be sent by E-mail (pdf or MS Word format) to Dino Numerato
(dino.numerato@unibocconi.it).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------^^^
Dates to remember
August 17th: deadline for submission of extended abstracts by e-mail
