Call for papers

The International Social Capital and Networks of Trust Congress (ISOCA) 2007

Organized by the
the Social Capital and Networks of Trust –Research Programme (Academy of Finland)

18 – 20 October 2007
Venue: University of Jyväskylä, Jyväskylä, Finland

Presentation

The International Social Capital and Networks of Trust Congress (ISOCA) 2007 is an international congress on social capital research. It brings together researchers from a range of different disciplines. The congress will be organised by the Social Capital and Networks of Trust –Research Programme (Academy of Finland). The congress will be held on 18 – 20 October 2007 at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland.

The concept of social capital has rapidly emerged into the social science debate. Social capital is usually understood as referring to the values and norms prevailing within the community, to the networks that are based upon those values and norms, and to the social trust that evolves through those common values and networks. On the other hand, social capital has also been used to refer to the social and cultural capacity of individuals.

Tracks

The congress organisation welcomes papers on a range of issues and developments such as:

  • Track 1: Social Capital as a Production Factor
  • Track 2: Regions, Communities and Social Capital
  • Track 3: Social Capital in Historical Perspective; Change and Continuity
  • Track 4: Social Capital and Work Organisations
  • Track 5: Social Relations, Networks and Social Capital
  • Track 6: Innovations and Network Society
  • Track 7: Social Capital in Politics
  • Track 8: Pierre Bourdieu and Social Capital

Submitting

While the congress encourages a wide range of issues, perspectives and methodologies related to social capital and networks, preference is given to papers that explain and understand how and where social capital is created. A second challenge is to explore the impacts of social capital upon economic development, the capacity for change in the labour markets as well as the implementation of political reform. Papers can also study the dysfunctions related to social capital, such as exclusion from the social fields, obstacles to social innovation or structural and cultural changes that undermine social security. The concept of social capital shall be understood as an integral part of the structures of political, social and cultural power and the practices of the new economy. On the other hand, social capital can also been used to refer to the social and cultural capacity of individuals.

Abstracts should be between 500 and 700 words and submitted to the organiser by 30 April 2007. All abstracts are externally refereed. Abstract contents should enable the referees to determine what issue, development or problem is being investigated, how it is investigated, what any findings are and what contribution is being made to understanding in this field. Decisions on acceptance will be made in May 2007.

Abstract submission takes place online. Abstracts can ONLY be handed in through the website which will be available early February at
http://www.jyu.fi/en/congress/soca07.

Registration and accomodation information

Detailed information on registration fees, social programme and accommodation information, as well as instructions for online registration and hotel reservation will be presented on the congress website at the beginning of February:
