4 year PhD Lord Kelvin/Adam Smith Scholarship at the University of Glasgow

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PASCAL, Department of Adult and Continuing Education within the Faculty
of Education and the Department of Urban Studies at the University of
Glasgow are offering a full Kelvin Smith scholarship for a 4 year PhD to
start in September 2009.

This scholar will work closely with Culture and Sport Glasgow to develop
a range of key performance measures and indicators to assess the nature
and extent of impact on local communities of events of different scales
- international, civic and neighbourhood. The focus will be on
non-economic impacts, especially in relation to social inclusion,
community cohesion, cultural capital and mental and physical health and
wellbeing. The work will be undertaken during the period running up to
the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014. There is a real concern to
better understand the impact of the Games and, in particular, its legacy
for citizens of Glasgow especially for those who live in deprived areas
in the city.  In addition to promoting sports participation, an
opportunity of the Games is its impact on morale - civic, community,
family and individual - generated by hosting a global event. Working
through PASCAL, the scholar will draw on international experience to
support CSG in learning and applying the lessons from previous large
scale events from around the world.

The deadline for applications is Friday 14th August. Interviews for candidates being considered for the award will take place on 24th August. The scholarship will commence on 22nd September 2009.
