Friday 24th

9.30 - 13.00 Welcome and introductions

Welcome by Wim van de Donk (chairman of the WRR).

General round: everyone is kindly requested to introduce her/himself and shortly outline their research interests and the main current issues on religion & civil society in their country or region (max. 10 minutes each).

13.00 - 14.30 Lunch

14.30 - 18.00 Three general issues further elaborated

  • Religion & civil society: theoretical perspectives – introduced by David Herbert
  • Religion & civil society in post-communist countries – introduced by Ina Merdjanova
  • Islam & civil society – introduced by Vincent Tiberj

19.00  Dinner

Saturday 25th

9.30 - 12.30  Chances and challenges for new empirical research

We aim to generate interesting research questions  and to explore the possibilities for further collaborative work. Three introductions to start with:

  • Religion & civil society in an international comparative perspective: The European Value Study – introduced by Loek Halman
  • Involvement in vested religious institutions and (other) civic participation – introduced by Peter Lüchau
  • In the margins? The civic impact of orthodox Protestantism and new spirituality – introduced by Joep de Hart
