Call for papers

Thirteenth World Congress of the
Association for Social Economics
"Social Economics, the Social Economy, and Wellbeing"

Presentation

The conference will take place on the downtown campus of Concordia University in the heart of multilingual, multiethnic Montreal, in the midst of a multitude of cafes, bookstores, restaurants, boutiques, museums, art galleries, B&Bs, and hotels. Concordia is also not far removed Montreal's three other universities: McGill, Montréal, and UQAM (Université du Québec à Montréal). It is also walking distance or a short metro or bus ride to the Old City, the well-restored centre of Canada’s second oldest city and one of the oldest urban centers in North America.

Submission

Paper and session proposals on different themes and perspectives are most welcome. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: economic policy and social wellbeing; social effects of the economic downturn; the role of the social-economy/nonprofits in mitigating effects of economic downturn; economic and social theories emphasizing wellbeing and capabilities; workplace policies and social justice; corporate social responsibility and socially responsible investment; microfinance; policies related to health, education and welfare; relationships between social values and economic life; and ethics and economics.

Sessions begins on Tuesday, June 29th, with the opening reception the evening of June 28th. All sessions will take place at Concordia University, downtown campus. Confirmed keynote speakers include Prof. Sakiko Fukuda-Parr of the New School (NYC) and Prof. Pierre Fortin of UQAM.

The deadline for submissions is February 15, 2010. Abstracts for papers should be 250 words or less. Proposals for full sessions are also welcome. Please include your affiliation and contact information with the abstract, and specify if you are a graduate student. All submissions should be sent to: morris.altman@vuw.ac.nz. The subject line should read ASE Montreal Conf 2010 sub (<your name>), e.g. “ASE Montreal Conf 2010 Sub (Altman).” You will be notified by March 15, 2010, whether or not your submission has been accepted for presentation.

ASE Best Student Paper Prize Competition

We welcome submissions for the ASE Best Student Paper Prize Competition.

This paper must be written by a graduate student or students.  Professors cannot be co-authors.  For the submission, the paper should be no longer than 8,000 words.  A prize committee of senior members of the Association for Social Economics will adjudicate the submitted papers.  The ASE sponsors the prize.

The prize will be awarded to the top two papers.  The winners of the Best Student Paper Competition 2010 receive:

  • a year's membership in ASE which includes a year's subscription to the Review of Social Economy  and the Forum for Social Eocnomics
  • $400 USD

To be eligible for the prize the sutdent author must register for the conference and present her/his paper.  The status of each author must be clearly stipulated (first,second and/or third authors, MA students or Ph.D. students, etc.).  Please submit your paper through the regular submission process, plus send a copy of your abstract and a copy of the completed paper to the Chair of the selection committee, Morris Altman (morris.altman@vuw.ac.nz).  The other committee members are Deb Figart (deb.figard@stockton.edu) and Martha Starr (mstarr@american.edu).

The New School
Prior to coming to the New School, she was a Research Fellow at Harvard
University's Kennedy School of Government.
From 1995 to 2004, she was director of the UNDP Human Development Reports.
Founder and Editor of the Journal of Human Development
On the editorial board of Feminist Economics.

Professor Pierre Fortin
Department of Economics
Université de Québec a Montréal (UQAM) His research interests include wage and price dynamics, economic fluctuations and growth, adolescent behaviour, taxation, fiscal and monetary policies, social policy and population economics. He is now particularly interested in Identity, Social Interactions and Well-Being.
In 1995 he was recently selected by the Quebec Association of Business Economists as "the most influential Quebec economist of the last decade".
He is a past President of the Canadian Economics Association.
