Graduate Program in Economics at the University of Siena

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The University of Siena invites applications for the Graduate Program in Economics (Economia Politica).

Deadline: June 22, 2009

A maximum of 16 students will be admitted. The 8 most qualied candidates will be awarded a four-year scholar-ship of about C 13,600 (gross of social security contribution) per year, for a total of about C 54,400, plus tuition remission. A limited number of students can take advantage of lodging offered by the University of Siena in the Post-Graduate College “S. Chiara” sited in the historical centre of Siena.

Since many years, the programme has gained a widespread international reputation for a pluralistic approach to economics, joining a strong training in quantitative methods with courses on economic history, economic analysis, economics of the institutions and the environment.

The programme has always included multiple approaches and has never been restricted to what, at that moment, could have been defined as main-stream economics.

Programme

The first two years are devoted to courses. After a first training in Mathematics, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics, a full menu of specialized courses is offered. It is our conviction that a full understanding of economic phenomena is favoured by a pluralistic view of economics; hence our constant attention is on exposing the students to different theoretical points of view.

The courses are held in English.

Courses take advantage of the network of international connections cultivated by our Department: some modules are taught by distinguished scholars visiting the University of Siena (in recent years, we have had for example R. Solow, K. Arrow, S. Bowles, O. Williamson, P. Diamond as Fulbright Professors).

Admission to the second year is conditioned on reaching a good result in the final exams of all first year courses.

Starting from the second year, the students develop their own research, under the direction of a supervisor chosen among the faculty of the Doctorate. The students are asked to participate in other research activities of the Department of Economics, such as seminars, workshops, and the Summer School. They are also encouraged to undertake periods of research in foreign academic institutions, as long as it helps them make progress in their research; for this purpose, they receive financial support from the University of Siena (see below).

Every year, the students present the state of their research in a public seminar. Based on this seminar, and on the judgement of the supervisor, it is decided on the admission to the following year.

The doctorate is awarded after discussion of an original piece of scientific work. This can be written in Italian or in English.
