Rankings of World Universities and Departments

This section collects links to web sites reporting rankings of world universities and departments. Selected rankings are based on criteria like research publications and citations, the institution's reputation, the awards received by the academic staff and former students - e.g. Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals - the degree of internationalization, and the teachers/students ratio.

Essential Resources

Times Higher World University Rankings
The Times Higher World University Ranking, is the first to use peer review to establish a global pecking order. In addition to a poll of 1,300 academics in 88 countries, the ranking takes account of staffing levels and research citations. The ranking is edited by the Times Higher Education Supplement.

Academic Ranking of World Universities
The 2004 edition of the world university rankings edited by the Institute of Higher Education of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The ranking takes account of the quality of education, the quality of faculty, the research output and the size of the institutions.

Ranking of World Universities in the Web
A collection of university rankings edited by InternetLab (Observatorio de Ciencia y Tecnologia en Internet). Starting from the assumption that the Web has become one of the main sources to obtain information on academic and scientific activities, these rankings are based on several "webometrics" indicators: size, visibility, popularity and number of rich files.

The America's Best Colleges Ranking edited by U.S.News & World Report. The indicators used to measure academic quality are peer assessment, retention, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, graduation rate performance and alumni giving rate. Access to rankings is limited to subscribers.

• Asia's best Science and Technology Universities
The ranking of science and technology Schools edited by Asiaweek is based on indicators of the academic reputation, student selectivity, faculty resources, financial resources and research output.

• Business Week 2003 Full Time MBA Profiles
The 2002 rankings result from the opinions of 219 corporate recruiters and 11,518 students at 88 B-schools around the world, and from BusinessWeek's measure of each B-school's intellectual capital.

• Customized Graduate Program Rankings
This website, edited by PhD.org, allows the visitor to get customized rankings of graduate programs based on National Research Council data.

• Department and Journal Rankings
This page is edited by the University of Leicester. It contains the results of a recent study, supported by the European Economics Association, providing an up-to-date ranking of economic journals that are used to compute world-wide rankings of academic institutions in Economics for the period 1994 to 1998.

• Financial Times MBA Rankings
The MBA international rankings edited by the Financial Times. It includes rankings of the top full-time MBA programs in the USA, Canada, Europe, Asia and Australia.

• Guardian's University Guide
EducationGuardian.co.uk's interactive guide to universities and colleges is the most comprehensive source of information on the UK's academic sector. There are separate rankings for different teaching and research subjects.

• Le classement des meilleures universités français
The Webometrics ranking of French universities, edited by InternetLab (Observatorio de Ciencia y Tecnologia en Internet). The ranking is based on "webometrics" indicators like size, visibility, popularity and number of rich files, which aim to quantify the quality of universities' web sites.

• Recent Rankings of Economics Departments
This ranking of economics departments by publications in ten top journals compares departments in Europe and Israel with 14 prominent departments from the top 40 in the US, together with the Department of Economics of the University of Toronto.

• Ranking of British Universities
Top 20 ratings for British Universities returning history, politics and sociology units of assessment. The ranking is edited by the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The ranking is in pdf format is hosted by the University of Exeter.
