The Department of Economics and Institutions is a center for research and specialized training. The Department promotes and coordinates research activities in the fields of Political Economy, Monetary Economics, International Economics, Economic History, and Private and Public Law.

The Department offers five PhD programs and three Masters programs. These programs are completed by rounds of workshops and seminars held annually with broad participation of internationally recognized researchers and scholars.

The Department actively engages in both national and international projects related to current economic and financial problems. As a result the Department has an excellent publication record.
International exchange of professors and students is a high priority of the Department. Five doctoral scholarships are awarded annually to international students. The percentage of foreign students in doctoral programs is approximately 12%, twice the national average.
